The Florida Sand Pear (https://blogs.ifas.ufl.edu/columbiaco/2019/07/01/florida-sand-pears/) is a tree that many families in Florida's, long and varied history, have used as a food source. The fruit of this tree can be used in cooking to make pies, jams, and many other things. The wood however is not usually considered useful due to the limited size of the tree. In my case, the limited size is not a deterrent at all. I happen to have one of these wonderful fruit trees in my front yard that needed pruning. After pruning the tree I decided to use as much of the wood that I could salvage as knife handles. The wood is extremely beautiful and has a rich caramel color. The wood is dense enough that one stabilized (https://turntex.com/product/cactus-juice-resin-and-dyes) it can be finished and polished into a truly unique knife handle. Every knife I make is one of a kind but a knife with a Sand Pear handle is one of my more rare products. I even use the smaller pieces to get the most out of this gorgeous wood.
The photos above show the rich color of Florida Sand Pear when used a a single wood for the knife handle.
The photo above shows how well the Florida Sand Pear can be accented with Florida Red Cedar.
In the above photo I used the Florida Sand Pear as a Bolster to accent Florida Wild Plum. I believe these are 2 of the most beautiful Florida Fruitwoods.
I pared the Florida Sand Pear with Florida Wild Black Cherry on the handle pictured above.
